The acquisition means Ridgefield-based HAN's remaining selling seven weekly newspaper in Fairfield County will now be owned and operated by Hearst.
The deal - financial terms of which were not disclosed - transfers the print and digital assets of The Ridgefield Press, The Wilton Bulletin, New Canaan Advertiser, The Shelton Herald, The Darien Times, The Milford Mirror and The Trumbull Times.
Hearst Connecticut Media Group now controls eight daily newspapers, 20 weeklies and 21 websites in the state.
The national Hearst chain publishes 24 dailies, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Houston Chronicle and 71 weeklies, as well as Esquire and Cosmopolitan magazines.
“Hearst Connecticut Media Group is committed to delivering the highest standard of reporting across local communities in our state,” Hearst Connecticut Media publisher Paul Barbetta said in a statement. “This acquisition furthers our ability to serve consumers and advertisers in one of the country’s top markets.”
In a joint statement, HAN co-owners Martin Hersam and Thomas Nash said, “Hersam Acorn Newspapers is grateful to have served the readers of Fairfield County over the years. We are certain Hearst Newspapers’ Connecticut Media Group will continue to provide the same committed service.”
